After the success of Australia day at two Sandwell schools recently, I was inspired to sculpt the monster that the map shape turned into (See a couple of posts below). Based on this creature here is the first of several images created to allow the process of sculpting the form in 3D to begin. Further posts will show the progress so check back from time to time.
On many occasions people have asked me to publish some of the images of school buildings that I’ve turned into monsters, well here you go…see if you can spot the visual cues that translate into the final designs. Top to bottom- Yew Tree School, Whitecrest School, St. Margarets School and All Saints School.
To help you along, here’s a monster designed from the map of Australia for a special Australia themed educational day, done backwards so you can see where the imagery comes from. Enjoy!
This week saw the Make me a Monster workshop spread its tentacles into both sites of Yew Tree School with the usual crazy results!
After detailed discussions with Head teacher Mr. Martin and assistants Gail Moore, Lisa Holian, Penny Weston and Tejal Harders, it was decided to run two creative and then technical workshops with the students. The stunning ICT suites kitted out with high end Apple Macs and Wacom graphics tablets at both Yew Tree venues were a testament to the school’s commitment to deliver the very best learning environments to students and teachers alike.
The first creative sessions went brilliantly and, as seems to always be the case, I was staggered at the pupils’ levels of creativity and confidence to try new things. Much fun was had distorting images and photographs of the students themselves and introducing new and innovative approaches to creativity (Including humming at anyone who walked past the lesson! Apologies to anyone who thought there were swarms of bees somewhere!)
Designs of the two democratically voted winners of each day were whisked away by me and rendered in colour (See below) and a certificate of merit will be presented to the pupils and Schools after the half term break.

Today saw the second sessions of the seven-week creativity workshop course at Grove Vale School.
Once again, true to form the pupils took to the ideas like ducks to water and quickly created all sorts of imagery from basic random scribbles.
The scribble technique is a commonly used method to generate randomness in designs and art and it’s surprising how many different shapes, objects, animals and faces you can spot in a mess of wavy lines if you look at them long enough!
The image above took centre stage as one pupil inadvertently doodled Einstein’s theory of mass-energy equivalence….when asked to explain what they were thinking about they commented…
“In physics, mass–energy equivalence is the concept that the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content. In this concept the total internal energy E of a body at rest is equal to the product of its rest mass m and a suitable conversion factor to transform from units of mass to units of energy. If the body is not stationary relative to the observer then account must be made for relativistic effects where m is given by the relativistic mass and E the relativistic energy of the body. Albert Einstein proposed mass–energy equivalence in 1905 in one of his Annus Mirabilis papers entitled “Does the inertia of a body depend upon its energy-content?”
The “Create a Crazy Cartoon Crocodile” Australia themed workshops slithered into action at two Sandwell schools this week with brilliant results!
Pupils at Whitecrest and St Margarets School flexed their imaginations to create designs for two imaginary twelve feet long scaled monsters using collage, paint, traditional drawing and a healthy dose of creativity.
Students at each school were shown a presentation about how they could use their creative abilities in a new and imaginative way, and then worked in teams to make sections of the creature that all finally fitted together end to end.
Their brilliant use of materials and enthusiasm to create were amazing to watch and teachers at both schools made comment about how well the day’s events had gone.
The day was part of the International Business Enterprise Week. “The workshops were a great success, I’m very pleased with what we’ve achieved!” said Peter Corley from the Sandwell Education Business Partnership who organised the weeklong schedule of activities with partners the West Midlands Co-op and Q3 Academy.

Having already turned Grove Vale School into a goblin, comments in a recent meeting “offered” me a mild challenge to “re- find” something in a picture of the school’s new entrance area…
Not wanting to disappoint, the image above emerged out of a couple of minutes of starring, see if you can match the bits up from the school to the finished scribble!
In addition, last week saw two workshops and a teacher training session which all went brilliantly! The workshops launched the start of a seven week creative development course for the students, so here’s looking forward to them all being as sucessful as the first ones! Many thanks also to all the teachers attending the CPD session who watched some of the visual “oddness” that the students had already seen. Its always amusing watching adult’s reaction and confusion to things that pupils tend to see through almost immediately!
